What is this project about?

The Asia Pacific is considered to be the most disaster prone region in the world. Since the 1970s, more than 5000 disasters have hit the region causing more than 2 billion fatalities and affecting the lives of more than 6 billion people.

Community Based Organizations (CBOs) across Asia have become experts at maximizing impact with limited resources, especially when faced with disasters. Despite shortfalls in funding and capacity, these local organizations are on the frontlines preparing for and recovering from increasing occurrences of natural hazards. They have the advantage of local knowledge and ease of direct access to beneficiaries due to their location, social connections, and abilities with local language and culture.

Give2Asia and the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR) are implementing a 2-year program called NGO Disaster Preparedness Program Phase II: Deepening Disaster Resilience. It builds on the experiences and success of the Phase I Program and expands the network of community-based nonprofits in Asia, as well as international donors, focused on disaster preparedness.

The program aims to:
• Create a network to connect CBOs in South and Southeast Asia;
• Learn from and share information on best practices with peer organizations in the region; and
• Build an educated donor network that is engaged and understands how to support community-based disaster preparedness efforts.

What We Do

The Community of Practice was developed to:
• Contribute to increasing and strengthening the capacities of CBOs and NGOs in 6 countries in Asia (Bangladesh, Indonesia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, and Timor Leste);
• Provide a platform to efficiently share national and regional technical resources and expertise among CBOs and NGOs;
• Facilitate effective and efficient delivery of services to CBOs that will strengthen community disaster preparedness by creating a network of local organizations that can rapidly respond to future disasters; and
• Build new and strengthen existing partnerships and alliances in the 6 targeted Asian countries.
Members of the Community of Practice are involved in three major learning activities:
• Learning Theme: Members gather per country to agree on a common learning theme that will guide the focus of country-level activities.
• Learning Period: Each country plans and conducts focused discussions and learning sessions based on their learning theme. It runs from 3-6 months, depending on the agreement of members.
• Learning Tools and Forms of Interaction: Each country develops learning tools and conducts discussions using agreed upon approaches and methodologies.

Project Partners

The International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR) is an international development organization working on rural development issues since the 1960s. Headquartered in the Philippines, its mandate is to help address poverty, hunger, and related issues of community development and local governance. IIRR has been espousing Community-Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR), while incorporating Climate Change Adaptation (CCA), aimed at building communities resilient to increasing disaster risks and adaptable to climate change. IIRR’s CMDRR work includes providing trainings and courses for development and humanitarian workers and implementing programs aimed at developing the knowledge and skills of partners and other development actors to facilitate CMDRR. This has been successfully done in a number of areas in Asia and Africa.

Give2Asia works with corporations, foundations, and families to fund charitable projects and social enterprises. Its local expertise and regional focus help build strong relationships between funders and recipients in 25 countries. Give2Asia makes it possible for donors to support local organizations in Asia addressing critical issues such as healthcare, education, livelihood, and the environment. It builds long-term connections between donors and local programs in Asia by fostering trust and accountability on both sides of the relationship. Give2Asia has a team of local staff, advisors, and partners that ensure projects are effective, results are transparent, and grant recipients are accountable. They report on activities to certify that projects meet the needs of the target beneficiaries and the donor, and try to find new ways to expand sources of funding.
