About this country

Timor-Leste, which has a mountainous topography, is located in an area of high regional seismic activity and exposure to heavy monsoon rains. It is vulnerable to natural hazards including floods, strong winds, landslides, earthquakes, and tsunamis. While most disasters in Timor Leste are localized and periodic, they do have serious impacts on local communities. From November to April, the southern coast of the country is at risk from tropical cyclones, which cause flooding and destructive waves. During the dry season, droughts are experienced in large parts of Timor Leste at two year intervals. Although Timor Leste has no active volcanoes, it can be affected by the Holocene volcanic groups located in its neighboring Indonesian Islands.

Learning Themes

• Basic concepts and practice of disaster risk reduction management;
• Conducting community disaster risk assessments and analysis; and
• Trends and effective practices in watershed management.
